Our mission is to inspire Boise to change the stigma around homelessness with compassion. One of the biggest challenges we see is that when people encounter someone experiencing homelessness, they often don’t know what to do. Many people want to help but feel unsure or hesitant.

That’s why we created Neighbor Kits.

Neighbor Bags are thoughtfully designed toiletry packs filled with essential items that people experiencing homelessness often need, including:

Hand warmers for cold nights

Bottled water for hydration

Nutritious snacks to keep energy up

Socks to protect against the elements

Hygiene essentials and more

A Practical Way to Make a Difference

Neighbor Bags are meant to be kept in your car, backpack, or anywhere convenient so that the next time you see someone in need, you have something tangible and helpful to give. If you’re hesitant to give money or unsure how to engage, these kits offer a simple way to take action with kindness.

The Challenge: Be a Neighbor

What makes these kits even more special? Each one contains a “Be a Neighbor” challenge card. These optional cards encourage an extra act of kindness beyond just handing out a bag. A challenge might be:

💛 “Pick up a sandwich from a local shop and share it.”
💛 “Take a few minutes to have a real conversation.”

What we do

Outreaches

Once a month, Neighbor Idaho brings donations, food, and a whole lot of love to downtown Boise. We distribute supplies (socks, clothes, hygiene products) based on the seasonal and practical needs. While these products are important, the heart of these outreaches is to connect with these people by having conversations that make them feel loved, seen and supported. We usually like to have around 10-15 volunteers for these outreaches.

Block Parties

Biannually, we partner with some of our favorite local businesses and host block parties in the center of Cooper Court. These are designed to be a place of safety, fun, and community for our unhoused neighbors. We cook delicious food, play music, dance, play games and give out haircuts…all for free of course.This is one of our favorite events of the year! At these two events, we like to have a range of 25-30 volunteers.

Community Involvement

We are passionate about empowering and educating our community to love our homeless community every day, not just once a month. To accomplish this, we will be launching Neighbor Packs (coming very soon) so you can always strike up a conversation with a neighbor, no matter where you are or what resources you have available. Additionally, supporting other organizations is important to us, so please reach out if you would like more information about connecting with our organization or if you need support at your next event!

Our story

Neighbor Idaho is a non-profit based in Boise, ID founded by Daniel Thomas in 2018.

Daniel's experience serving on Skid Row in Los Angeles stirred his heart to advocate for those living on the streets in Boise. He began filling a practical need by handing out water bottles on hot days and reminding those on the streets that they are not forgotten.

As Daniel's vision grew, Neighbor was born. Today, Neighbor's team of volunteers flood the streets of Downtown Boise monthly, bringing toiletries, food, clothing, and other items to those without a house. Neighbor continues to foster genuine relationships with people in their own environment by showing love and support with no strings attached.

Daniel Thomas

Daniel Thomas first dreamed up the idea for Neighbor back in 2015 and officially put that dream into action in 2018. Since then, he’s been all-in on building community, fostering connection, and helping his neighbors feel seen and supported. By day, Daniel also works in the nonprofit sector as the Housing Director for CATCH, where he helps lead housing efforts for individuals and families experiencing homelessness in Boise. Outside of work, Daniel is a proud husband to Lindsey (married in 2021) and a new dad to their daughter, Scarlet, born in 2024. He’s passionate about music—playing drums at his church and teaching lessons on the side. When he’s not behind a drum kit, he’s likely playing pickleball, hitting the golf course, or catching a football game with friends and family.

Lindsey Thomas

Originally from the Bay Area, Lindsey moved to Boise in 2016 and quickly fell in love with the city. She is married to Daniel Thomas, the founder of Neighbor Idaho, and together they have a beautiful baby girl. Lindsey and Daniel met through serving at Neighbor Idaho, where she couldn't get enough of the mission he had started in Downtown Boise. Lindsey feels most alive with a book in hand, sewing cute clothes for her daughter, and enjoying time outdoors.

Busayo is a passionate advocate for servant leadership with a heart for the disadvantaged. She has volunteered with various organizations across the Treasure Valley, dedicating her time and energy to helping those in need. Through her work with Neighbor, she strives to bring love and support to people often overlooked by society. In addition to her volunteer efforts, Busayo enjoys cooking and is committed to building meaningful relationships within the communities she serves.

Born and raised in Boise, Kyon has always had a love for people and our downtown area. As the city grew, so did poverty and the need for low income housing. Using his love for culture with his love for people, he decided to use his creative sense to make graphics, artwork, and cast vision for the future of homelessness in Boise. He believes that we should love and empower people with no strings attached, and is committed to making everyone around him feel like they have a friend. Never stop loving people, no matter what. That is forever.
